A little sourdough baking. I usually don't make my loaves look this fancy, but it was fun and pretty easy.

Making sourdough bread takes very little hands on time. This loaf was started last night with starter, water, flour, salt and leftover polenta. I have been mixing all the ingredients at the beginning- it takes 5 to 10 minutes. Then the dough sat overnight and most of the morning. When I was ready to bake I shaped the loaf and placed it in my Dutch oven- another 10 minutes. I only let it rise until the oven was preheated and then popped it right in. I baked it at 450 degrees for 30 minutes with the lid on, then at 350 degrees for 20 minutes with the lid off.

Let's talk about preschoolers for a minute. It can be hard to juggle having littles around while homeschooling older students. Sometimes they are disruptive and noisy making it hard for bigger kids to focus. Sometimes we start feeling pressure that our little ones need to be doing formal school, know their numbers and letters by 3, and know how to read by 4!

I am firm believer in no formal schooling before age 6 and that young children learn best through play and exploration. However that doesn't mean we don't take advantage of the many learning opportunities in daily life. I am now on my 4th preschooler. Here are some of the things we do to promote natural learning and keep her occupied during school hours:

- work on habits and simple chores like sitting still for short periods, cleaning up after herself, and setting the table.

-include her in morning time which usually includes, singing, poetry, Bible memory, art study, and composer.

-special activities during school only such as play dough, peg dolls, and sometimes forts built by big brothers.

-her own special stack of books. I have chosen lots of beautiful picture books, nursery rhyme books, number and alphabet books that we read together in between my work with the older children.

-playing outside. Being outside gives plenty of opportunity for exploring and casual learning; counting objects, noticing different colors, etc.

- working beside me. Little ones always love to be doing whatever Mama is doing. Whether it's gardening or baking there is so much opportunity for bonding and learning!

-around age 5 we transition into slightly more formal learning only if the child is asking.

So be inspired to slow down and enjoy the little years with your children. Don't rush them into academics to soon and miss the beauty, wonder and natural curiosity of preschoolers!
