Autumn is my very favorite season! I actually love them all and embrace the joys of each as it comes. And yet autumn holds a special place in my heart and has since I was in my teens. Over the years I have fallen in love even more as some very memorable t events have happened in the fall including my wedding day and the birth of our first child!
There are so many things to love about fall. Cooler weather, cozy sweaters, the first fire in the woodstove, tea and coffee all day, bright colored leaves and pumpkins, shorter days, and books… always more books.
So, on to the books! We love to include some seasonal favorites in our read aloud rotation. Here are a few favorite Autumn picture books in our home.
I bought my daughter both collections of Elsa Beskow mini editions for Christmas and birthdays. We love them all! This one is is a delightful tale of the adventure the two acorn children get into after being blown away in the wind.
This is a simple account of a simple life. The ox cart man and his family spend the year creating items from things grown and raised on their farm. In the autumn the ox-cart man takes everything off to market many miles away. The pictures are a joy, as everything done by Barbara Cooney is.
I discovered this one at our sweet local bookstore and coffee shop. As soon I saw the beautiful folk art style painting on the cover I was intrigued. When I picked it up and read the lilting story in verse about the life of Johnny Appleseed I was hooked. This one is sure to be treasured in our home for many years.
This one is a sweet and simple reminder of the joys of November and the things we are grateful for. Perfect for reading around Thanksgiving.
Winter is coming and the mouse family is busy preparing. All except Moses that is, he is distracted by the dance of the leaves and the song of the wind. A sweet tale showing the value of joy and beauty.
This is one tale in a series of sweet stories about the mice families of Brambly Hedge. All the mice are gathering berries and nuts for the storehouse when little Primrose wanders off and gets lost. A sweet, satisfying story with such cozy, detailed illustrations that I just want to live in the story.
