We are in a season of change, we have come to a bend in the road and it is a bit hard to see around the corner. It is both exciting and sad at the same time. This whole year has been one of questions, deciding what to do next. We love our little farm and the life it has given us. Yet somehow it hasn’t been quite enough recently. We came to the place where we either needed to make it grow larger or scale back to a smaller size.
We came to the place where we either needed to make the farm grow larger or scale back to a smaller size.
Some of the challenges we have been facing include: trying to keep the deer out and the discouragement of finding a bite taken out of half the heads of lettuce in one night; figuring out how the new Food Safety and Modernization Act is going to affect our farm; balancing the needs of our young, growing family with the demands of the farm; the need for a more reliable(less weather dependent and seasonal) income; as well as a simple desire to interact with more people in various settings which can be challenging when most days are spent weeding the vegetable rows.
So, this year we had decided to cut way back and do only one Farmer’s Market each week. Recently plans have changed again. With a late hard frost in June which set back some of our crops and the opportunity for Farmer to take a part time job at UPS we will be cutting back even more. At this point it looks like we will not be doing the Farmer’s Market at all for the rest of the season. It is sad to be giving that up, even if it is only for a season. We love the community of friends and loyal customers that has developed through our involvement in the Farmer’s Market and will miss it dearly.
We will still have a beautiful crop of garlic to harvest in a few weeks as well as a nice selection of veggies for sale on the farm. Both our garlic and skin care products will continue to be available on our website!
Although in some ways it feels like the end of a beautiful season of our life this is not the end, it is only the beginning of something new!
Change. It can be both beautiful and challenging. In one sense we must always lose something in order to gain something. Although in some ways it feels like the end of a beautiful season of our life this is not the end, it is only the beginning of something new! This is where we need to be right now, it is what is best for us at this moment on this crazy journey called life.
There are actually still more questions in our minds than there are answers right now about the direction to take the farm next, we just take it one step at a time. The exciting part is that we have lots of ideas!

Summer is in full swing with warm weather, busy days, long lazy evenings, gardening, activities and events. The last thing I want to be doing is slaving away in the kitchen making, hot complicated meals. This time of year we love big salads, grilled meals, and pasta salads. The quicker and easier the better, cold (Read More)
We all know that lots of fresh vegetables and fruits are healthy and we want to feed our children the best we can so they grow strong and healthy. Unfortunately many children seem to dislike most vegetables and we fight to try to make them eat them. I can certainly relate! My two boys have (Read More)
Lemons… so bright and cheerful. Every late winter/spring I start craving everything lemon; lemon bars, lemon meringue pie, and lemon curd. Maybe it is the sunny yellow color after the dark winter days. My favorite kind of lemons are Meyers, they are so sweet and fragrant and my Grandpa in California has a tree that (Read More)
I have noticed that there are several myths about certified organic products that periodically circulate around the internet. So I decided that it would be a good idea to address these on the blog as they come to my attention. This is the first in a series I will be doing on Organic Myths. I (Read More)
Spring has been gently and gradually approaching little by little, a bit more sunshine, a hint of green grass in the fields, a whisper of warmer breezes… A sunny early spring day is the perfect time for an adventure! So one sunny afternoon recently I had promised the boys we would set out for the (Read More)
Reading aloud and reading in general are very important in our family. Books open up a world of adventure and ideas. Through a book we can travel anywhere we want to, learn whatever we need to, and enrich our lives in so many ways. Also, this year especially I have been falling in love with (Read More)
As a wife, mommy and farmer there are always so many things to learn! I am always learning something new… and then when I think I finally have it figured out a new adventure awaits with a brand new learning curve. And really that’s okay with me, I love to learn and grow. After all life (Read More)
I love baking and making a mess in the kitchen. I don’t love cleaning up the mess so much though, but that is irrelevant right now. During the summer I am busy and spend nearly every waking moment outside so don’t do anything time consuming or elaborate in the kitchen. This time of year however (Read More)
